Merz Aesthetics Continues To Grow its Aesthetics Portfolio

Merz Aesthetics Continues To Grow its Aesthetics Portfolio

SAN MATEO, Calif., Nov. 16, 2011 /-- Merz Aesthetics today announced that the United States (U.S.) Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved BELOTERO Balance® for the correction of moderate-to-severe facial wrinkles and folds. BELOTERO Balance® filler is a hyaluronic acid-based cohesive gel dermal filler designed to deliver natural-looking results with little recovery time. BELOTERO® filler is currently approved for aesthetic use in the United Kingdom, Germany, Italy, Russia, Austria and Switzerland.

"BELOTERO Balance® is a soft dermal filler that is designed to achieve meaningful results by integrating into facial skin tissue," said Rhoda S. Narins, M.D., lead investigator and Clinical Professor of Dermatology at New York University Medical School, New York, N.Y. "With BELOTERO Balance®, patients are able to see a visible softening in their lines for a natural look that lasts."

BELOTERO Balance® Dermal Filler is the newest addition to the Merz Aesthetics™ expanding portfolio of intelligently designed products and the second Merz Aesthetics FDA approval in 2011.

"BELOTERO Balance® Dermal Filler is an important addition to our expanding portfolio of aesthetic products in the United States," said Dennis Condon, President and CEO of Merz Aesthetics, Inc. "The availability of BELOTERO Balance® provides physicians with a new option for patients seeking treatment with a dermal filler."

The FDA approval of BELOTERO Balance® Dermal Filler is based on the results from a randomized, double-blind, active-controlled, multicenter study of 118 patients. In a split face design, patients received bilateral treatment with BELOTERO Balance® filler and an approved bovine collagen (COL) filler for the correction of their moderate-to-severe nasolabial folds (NLFs).

Patients were evaluated using a five-point Wrinkle Severity Scale (WSRS), ranging in severity from least (0) to most (4). BELOTERO Balance® Dermal Filler demonstrated greater reduction in the mean change of the WSRS at all-time points and maintained more than 1 point WSRS reduction at week 24 (compared to 0.5 for the control).

No serious adverse events (AEs) were reported in this study for either treatment. Commonly occurring, short-term injection site reactions, including swelling, bruising and injection site nodules, were mild to moderate in severity.
Important BELOTERO Balance® Dermal Filler Treatment Considerations
BELOTERO Balance® Dermal Filler is FDA-approved for injection into the dermis for the correction of moderate-to-severe facial wrinkles and folds, such as nasolabial folds. After injection, patients may experience redness, bruising, swelling or other local side effects. More rare side effects may include swelling that lasts longer, unevenness or firmness in the area injected, and as with any injection, there may be a risk of infection.

Another Botox Challenger

The cosmetics industry continues to work hard to offer the beauty conscious ways to beat wrinkles without an injection. Source:

The cosmetics industry continues to work hard to offer the beauty conscious ways to beat wrinkles without an injection. According to the latest published reports the next answer might just be the Freezeframe Boost face serum. It will be on sale in Boots stores in just a week but it has already amassed a waiting list with roughly 14,000 people already signed up.
The developers of the product claim that this is the best anti-wrinkle treatment on the market today. They state that results can be seen in little as five minutes after just one application. The strength of the product rests on a protein called ‘Snap-8’ which inhibits the activity of wrinkle causing cells.
Independent tests have surpassed expectations with all the women involved reporting a reduction in wrinkles. Freezeframe will be sold for £49 (approximately US$78).

Facing the Facts

Can what you eat really improve your skin? Will any foods prevent lines and wrinkles and make my 45-year-old skin look younger?
A. We’re thrilled you’ve asked that question, because feeding your face can help. Besides, it’s way more fun to eat your way to youthful-looking skin than get (or pay for) Botox injections.
There’s good evidence that midlife women with the most youthful-looking skin (fewer wrinkles, thinning and dryness) also have the most vitamin C in their diets. Makes sense, since vitamin C builds collagen, the support structure that keeps your skin’s surface smooth. Young-looking women also tend to eat less fat and fewer carbs, and have higher levels of linoleic acid, an omega-6 fatty acid found mainly in nuts and dark, leafy greens (think spinach, kale).
Ellagic acid, found primarily in pomegranate and red berries, is another food wrinkle-fighter. It’s recently been credited with fighting aging inflammation from Mr. Sun and reducing collagen breakdown.

Other foods that will get to your face from your plate include egg yolks, avocados, lentils, chickpeas and beans (including soybeans), salmon and green tea.

Q. Help! I’ve lost 26 pounds but I’ve been stuck in a weight-loss plateau for six weeks. I haven’t changed my diet or exercise habits. I’m determined to break through. But how?

A. In our experience, a dieter who freaks out when the scale is as still as a statue is often ignoring other signs that her body is changing. Are your clothes fitting better? Do you feel stronger? A “yes” means you’re swapping out fat for lean muscle and building your cardiovascular fitness, even if you’re not dropping a pound.

There are some ways to unstick your stuck scale. You may need to challenge your body more, which means you’ll have to work a little harder. No, it’s not fair, but the less you weigh, the fewer calories you burn doing the same thing. Here’s how to up the ante:

† Walk a little longer. If you’re walking 30 minutes a day, add five-minute increases over a couple of weeks.

† Walk a little harder. Throw in some hills or kick up the incline on that treadmill. And add a few bursts of high-speed walking or jogging; the intensity helps burn fat.

† Get a little stronger. Increase your strength training to one session every other day. No more than that, though; the in-between days are when you build muscle.

† Choose smaller plates. Portion sizes get smaller, and that makes your waist smaller.

Q. Do plant sterols like the ones in some bread spreads really lower cholesterol?

A. You bet. Using a plant sterol spread every day could knock down your lousy LDL cholesterol by 14 percent. Plus, people who regularly use these heart-helping spreads also have lower rates of lung, breast, stomach and prostate cancers. Just don’t put one big blob on your morning whole-wheat toast. Plant sterols do their job best in small doses, so spread them throughout the day (1 tablespoon of Smart Balance — a spread with more sterols than most — is about right).

Sterols are substances found in fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, whole grains and beans that limit your body’s ability to absorb cholesterol from food. Pair them with a cholesterol-fighting statin drug and you’ll kick down LDL by another 10 percent. That’s big.

Fighting Wrinkles You Don't Have Yet

The search for youth is starting younger.
In the aisles of Sephora, more anti-aging products are being marketed to women in their 30s and even their 20s. "We now have clients in their early 20s shopping in the anti-aging category," says Allison Slater, vice president of retail marketing for the cosmetics retailer.

When the Algenist anti-aging line was launched at Sephora last March, baby-boomer women older than 50 were the intended customers for its creams and serums, which saturate skin with nutrients and an ingredient extracted from algae. But the newest Algenist anti-aging products to launch in September will be ...
