SkinSchool: Polynucleotides are the latest innovative injectables storming the tweakments scene

What are polynucleotides, and the benefits of these injectable treatments?

Polynucleotides – or injectable bio-stimulators – explained by experts

“Polynucleotides are an injectable bio-stimulator,” Dr Soni explains. “They’re biopolymers – stretchy molecules made from fragments of fish DNA extracted from salmon or trout sperm, which closely resemble human DNA,” Dr Esho adds.

“The purpose of injecting the product is to stimulate our own cells to produce some of the things that we lose with ageing,” explains Dr Soni. Essentially, it “can change the expression of DNA,” Dr Ward tells us. “Polynucleotides boost collagen and elastin by up-regulating the fibroblast cells, as well as improving tissue regeneration and restoring skin tone and elasticity. It has an antioxidant and hydrating effect in addition to the bio-remodelling, therefore resulting in skin that looks and feels healthier,” Dr Soni continues.

In addition to Ameela, there are various brands producing the injectable product for aesthetic purposes, including Nucleofill, Pluryal Silk, and Mastelli.

Dr. Martin Jugenburg, from the Toronto Cosmetic Surgery Institute

Narcity spoke with a plastic reconstruction surgeon, Dr. Martin Jugenburg, from the Toronto Cosmetic Surgery Institute and he shared the five most common filler procedures in the city and how much they cost.

Price: $325 to $700

The procedure: Lip filler can help change the shape, size and appearance of lips, according to Jugenburg.

"For patients with naturally thin lips, fillers can add natural fullness for a more attractive pout. With aging, there is volume loss in the lips, which can emphasize fine lines in the lips, and filler can be used here for restoration of youthful volume."

Lip filler usually takes anywhere from a half to one full syringe, so at $650 to $700 per syringe, you are looking at spending at least $325 for the perfect pout.

What is ‘Traptox’? The Botox trend for posture to eliminate shoulder pain

We all know sitting at a desk all day is bad news for our posture, causing tense, achy shoulders for many.

Yes, movement like yoga can counteract it. But what if there was an easier way?

Enter Traptox, the latest ‘tweakment’ trend trending on social media, designed to lengthen your neck, shift your posture and release muscle tension.

Dr Grace Hula, aesthetic doctor and founder of G&M Healthcare, says: ‘Traptox, also known as “trapezius Botox,” is a procedure which involves administering Botox injections to the trapezius muscles which are located on either side of the neck.’

The trapezius muscles are responsible for moving and stabilising the shoulders and neck, but they often accumulate tension and knots due to prolonged poor posture, stress, or carrying heavy loads.

While Kens are opting for ‘Brotox’, women are apparently wanting ‘Traptox’ to get an elongated ‘Barbie neck’.

5 Things You Need to Know Before Having an Injectable Cosmetic Procedure

5 Things You Need to Know Before Having an Injectable Cosmetic Procedure

1. There are Different Types of Cosmetic Injectables

Botox was the first injectable cosmetic treatment using neurotoxin for facial aesthetic purposes. However, there are minimally invasive injectable alternatives that can be used to reduce wrinkles and to tighten or plump up sagging and tired skin.

Some of the more popular types include the following:

  • PDO thread lifts: Made from polydioxanone, the threads are injected into the subdermal level to stimulate collagen production. This results in skin tightening and rejuvenation.
  • Dermal fillers: A soft gel made from hyaluronic acid is injected into your facial skin to reduce wrinkles and revitalise your appearance.
  • Bio remodelling fillers: As injectables used to improve and boost collagen and elastin production, this treatment uses high concentrations of hyaluronic acid to restore skin firmness and vitality.
