Dr. Patrick Treacy discusses various strategies for managing complications arising from non-vascular dermal filler injections. Here’s an overview of his approach to managing these complications, particularly focusing on inflammation and infection:

Identification and Assessment: The first step is to accurately identify the complication. Dr. Treacy emphasizes differentiating between inflammatory reactions and infections as the treatment for each is distinct. Symptoms like redness, swelling, and tenderness shortly after the injection may suggest inflammation, whereas increasing pain, fever, and pus indicate infection.

Use of Steroids: For inflammation either caused immediately by an allergic type reaction or later at a few months by pro-inflammatroy low molecular weight hyaluronic acid molecules, I recommend the use of corticosteroids. Steroids can effectively reduce the inflammatory response by inhibiting the molecules and pathways that lead to inflammation. This treatment helps in managing symptoms such as swelling and redness without affecting the desired effects of the fillers. Cover these with antibiotics
Antibiotics for Infections: If an infection is suspected, I advise the use of appropriate antibiotics such as Doxycycline or Clarithromycin. The choice of antibiotic would depend on the suspected or confirmed causative bacteria. I stress the importance of using antibiotics judiciously to avoid antibiotic resistance and to ensure effective treatment of the infection.https://ailesburyclinic.ie/
